In 2001, google started providing a service that could translate about 8 languages and from english. Although the translation quality wasn't very good. So in 2003, google engineers decided to revamp the translation service and the quality of the translations.
Currently Google translate can now translate websites and text in over 64 languages. You can find more information about this on the Google Blog.

I encountered a friend through YouTube/Facebook. He lives in Slovenia. Many Facebook posts are in Slovene. I wish Google Translate could do a better job with Slovenian, notwithstanding that there are but a very few million people who use that language.
